USDA Awards $408,000 to South Dakota Meat Processors

USDA Awards $408,000 to South Dakota Meat Processors

By Scout Nelson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development recently announced $57 million in funding through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP). As part of this investment, two meat processing businesses in South Dakota received a combined $408,410 to improve their operations, increase production capacity, and create better market opportunities.

The funding supports small and regional meat processors by helping them purchase new equipment and improve their processing facilities. These investments are expected to strengthen local meat production, support livestock producers, and provide more processing choices for communities.

“This funding will help our small and regional processors expand and become more efficient in their operations, and this ultimately provides our producers more opportunity and more choices of where they take their beef. But also then to provide a good quality product in our communities,” said USDA Rural Development South Dakota State Director Lorraine Polak.

Funding Supports Two South Dakota Meat Processors

The $408,410 investment was divided between two South Dakota meat processing businesses. Both companies received funding to purchase new packaging and processing equipment to improve their daily operations.

Very Good Meat Company LLC Receives $224,292

Very Good Meat Company LLC received $224,292 through the program to expand its beef processing operations and increase its ability to produce value-added meat products.

The company planned to purchase three important pieces of equipment: a patty machine, a beef stick stuffer, and a rollstock packaging machine.

These machines are expected to improve production speed, make processing more efficient, and help the company maintain consistent product quality. The new equipment will also allow the business to process more locally sourced beef into higher-value products.

Value-added products are meat products that undergo additional processing or preparation before they reach customers. Examples include beef patties and beef sticks. Producing these products can help processors offer more choices and create additional business opportunities.

The investment is expected to help the company serve its customers more efficiently while creating better opportunities for local beef producers.

Bluebird Locker Inc Receives $184,118

Bluebird Locker Inc. received $184,118 to improve its packaging operations and increase processing efficiency.

The company planned to purchase a rollstock packaging machine to automate its packaging process. The new equipment is expected to reduce delays, improve production speed, and help address packaging bottlenecks.

According to the announcement, the investment could increase the company's processing capacity by up to 40%.

Automated packaging equipment can help meat processors complete more work in less time. It can also reduce the pressure on workers during busy production periods and improve the overall flow of operations.

With this equipment, Bluebird Locker is expected to handle more processing work and serve customers more effectively.

USDA Works to Strengthen the Meat Processing Industry

The Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program is designed to support independent meat and poultry processing businesses across the United States.

Small and regional processors play an important role in the country's agricultural and food supply chains. They provide livestock producers with additional places to process their animals and help communities access locally produced meat products.

However, many smaller businesses face challenges related to equipment costs, limited production capacity, and processing delays. Financial support through programs such as MPPEP helps these businesses invest in modern equipment, improve their facilities, and expand their services.

USDA has awarded more than $200 million to independent businesses through the program. These investments have helped support processing businesses and create thousands of jobs across the country.

The latest $57 million funding announcement further supports efforts to improve meat and poultry processing capacity. It also creates opportunities for smaller businesses to compete in the market and strengthen local food supply chains.

Supporting Local Producers and Communities

The investments in South Dakota are expected to benefit more than the two businesses receiving the funding. Improved processing facilities can provide livestock producers with additional options for selling their animals.

When local processors increase their capacity, farmers, and ranchers may have better access to nearby processing services. This can help strengthen connections between livestock producers, processors, and consumers.

Better equipment can also help businesses reduce delays, improve product quality, and manage larger workloads. These improvements support a stronger and more reliable meat supply chain.

Through the MPPEP program, USDA continues to support independent processors and encourage investment in local meat and poultry businesses.
