The USDA has declared Fulton County, Illinois, a disaster area due to severe losses caused by a derecho that occurred between July 15 and July 18, 2024. This declaration also extends support to farmers in counties bordering Fulton, including Knox, Mason, McDonough, Peoria, Schuyler, Tazewell, and Warren.
Farmers in these areas now have access to emergency loans and disaster recovery assistance, providing crucial support to those affected by the storm. “Illinois farmers will have access to emergency loans and other disaster recovery support thanks to Governor JB Pritzker, Secretary Vilsack and the USDA,” said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “Producers in declared counties have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for emergency loans, so I encourage them to act now.”
Emergency loan applications will be assessed by the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) based on individual circumstances, including the extent of losses and the farmer's repayment capacity. This ensures tailored support for those in need.
Farmers in the declared counties are encouraged to contact their local USDA Service Center for guidance or to file a Notice of Loss. Prompt action is key to securing the available assistance and ensuring recovery from the storm's significant impacts.
