USDA empowers tribal food systems - Grants, internships, and trade missions

By Jamie Martin

In a concerted effort to empower Tribal food systems, the Administration, through USDA, is allocating $62.8 million to support Tribal agriculture and food sovereignty.

Through the Indigenous Animals Harvesting and Meat Processing Grant Program, over $42 million is being distributed to eight Tribal Nations, facilitating the expansion of processing opportunities for animals native to North America.

This initiative aims to boost economic opportunities, enhance food security, and honor Indigenous traditions.

Simultaneously, $18 million is being invested in 23 projects under the Tribal Forest Protection Act, focusing on hazardous fuels reduction and watershed restoration to protect Tribal lands and communities.

Collaborative projects, such as the Keex'Kwaan Community Forest Partnership in Alaska, exemplify the shared responsibility in ensuring sustainable land management practices.

USDA is awarding $2.3 million to incorporate Indigenous foods into school meal programs across five organizations, promoting culturally relevant nutrition education and increasing access to traditional Indigenous foods for Tribal youth.

Additionally, USDA is launching a Tribal agriculture internship program, welcoming 14 students to learn about Tribal agriculture and food sovereignty.

These interns will contribute to USDA programs benefiting Indian Country, fostering a new generation of agricultural professionals with a deeper understanding of Tribal issues.

Lastly, USDA will sponsor its first-ever international trade mission focused on Tribal Nation and Native Hawaiian Community businesses and products, showcasing Tribal agribusinesses to prospective buyers in Canada.

These comprehensive initiatives underscore USDA's commitment to advancing Tribal sovereignty, strengthening food systems, and fostering economic opportunities in Tribal communities.
