Nebraska farmers and ranchers have access to several USDA assistance programs as they continue to face severe drought conditions and recover from major wildfire damage. The support is designed to help agricultural producers manage financial challenges and protect their operations during difficult weather conditions.
Much of Nebraska is currently experiencing moderate to exceptional drought. At the same time, producers are recovering from historic wildfires that burned nearly one million acres across western and central parts of the state earlier this year. These events have created significant challenges for livestock producers, crop growers, and rural communities.
To help producers understand available resources, the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) are partnering with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability. Together, they are hosting a free educational webinar to explain federal drought assistance programs and answer questions from producers.
One of the key programs available is the Livestock Forage Disaster Program. This program provides financial assistance to livestock producers who experience grazing losses due to drought conditions on eligible privately owned or leased land. Producers must meet reporting deadlines and submit applications within the required timeframes to receive assistance.
Additional support is available through the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program. This program helps cover extra costs associated with hauling water and transporting feed when drought conditions create shortages.
The Emergency Conservation Program is also available to assist producers with emergency water conservation efforts. In addition, eligible Conservation Reserve Program acres may be approved for emergency haying and grazing to help livestock operations secure feed supplies.
For producers facing financial difficulties, the Farm Service Agency offers emergency farm loans in counties that receive disaster designations. These loans can help farmers and ranchers recover losses and continue operating when commercial financing is unavailable.
USDA officials encourage producers with crop insurance coverage to promptly report any losses to their insurance agents after damage is discovered. Early reporting helps ensure timely processing of claims and assistance requests.
Through these programs, USDA aims to provide practical support to Nebraska producers as they manage drought impacts, recover from wildfire damage, and maintain the long-term sustainability of their agricultural operations.
