The U.S. Department of Agriculture unveiled a significant $100 million funding initiative for the SUN Bucks program, aimed at supporting families in purchasing groceries for children during summer months when school meals are unavailable.
Known formally as Summer EBT, SUN Bucks is a component of the USDA's broader Summer Nutrition Programs for Kids, designed to reduce costs and enhance food security for families.
Each eligible child in participating states will receive a $120 grocery benefit to use at various authorized retailers, including grocery stores and farmers markets. This initiative is projected to benefit over 30 million children across the country once fully implemented.
“Thanks to President’s leadership, USDA’s SUN Programs are already helping children and teens get much-needed nutrition over the summer,” said Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small.
The grants will assist in the development and enhancement of state technology systems necessary for the efficient delivery of SUN Bucks, with a focus on maintaining program integrity and control. This funding is available to all entities that are implementing or planning to launch SUN Bucks in the coming year.
This initiative not only supports children's nutritional needs during the summer but also aligns with the Administration’s objectives outlined during the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, focusing on enhancing food security and accessibility.
Families interested in the program can find more information and apply through the USDA’s SUN Programs website.
