The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched an initiative to support farmers interested in voluntary carbon credit markets. This program aligns with the goals of the Growing Climate Solutions Act and aims to address challenges that have limited farmer participation.
The USDA previously published a comprehensive report on the role of agriculture and forestry in carbon markets. Building on this assessment, the department is establishing a new program - "Greenhouse Gas Technical Assistance Provider and Third-Party Verifier Program."
This program will connect farmers with qualified technical assistance providers who can guide them through the process of generating credible carbon credits. Additionally, the USDA will establish a list of recognized carbon credit protocols to ensure consistency and transparency within the market.
"Farmers have the potential to earn income through carbon credit sales while contributing to climate solutions," said USDA Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt. Public input is essential for shaping this program and maximizing its impact for the agricultural industry.
The USDA is seeking public feedback on various aspects of the program, including criteria for evaluating carbon credit protocols, qualifications for technical assistance providers and verifiers, and specific protocols to be considered for inclusion.
