The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) designates three North Dakota counties as natural disaster areas because of severe drought conditions.
This designation provides important support to farmers and ranchers who face production challenges and financial losses due to dry weather.
The disaster designation applies to Billings, Bowman, and Slope counties. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, these areas experience severe drought conditions for an extended period during the growing season.
Such conditions can reduce crop yields, affect pasture quality, and create difficulties for livestock producers.
To help agricultural producers recover, the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) makes emergency loans available to eligible farmers. These loans are designed to provide financial assistance for a variety of recovery needs.
Producers may use the funds to replace essential equipment, purchase livestock, reorganize farm operations, or refinance certain eligible debts.
Several neighboring North Dakota counties are also eligible for assistance because they are contiguous to the primary disaster areas. These counties include Adams, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, McKenzie, and Stark. Farmers in these locations may also qualify for emergency loan programs offered through FSA.
USDA reviews emergency loan applications based on the level of loss experienced by the producer, available security, and the applicant’s ability to repay the loan.
The program is intended to provide practical support and help agricultural businesses continue operating during difficult conditions.
The drought disaster designation began on August 11, 2026. Producers who need assistance should review eligibility requirements and prepare their applications before the deadline of May 3, 2027.
