The State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) is seeking volunteer judges for its 2025 competition, scheduled for March 27-28 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
Open to students in grades 6-12, the event celebrates youth achievements in science and engineering while fostering interest in STEM careers.
Judges are vital to the success of this annual competition, providing students with valuable feedback and guidance. Participants will showcase over 500 projects, representing categories such as biochemistry, robotics, environmental sciences, and more.
The event is Iowa’s largest STEM competition, drawing over 650 students eager to share their innovative ideas.
Alexa Groff, SSTFI director, emphasized the importance of judges, stating, “Your expertise can inspire the next generation of scientists and leaders. By volunteering, you’ll help foster curiosity and innovation in these young minds.”
Judges with experience in science, technology, engineering, or math are encouraged to participate. An advanced degree or professional experience is preferred for senior high projects, though no special training is required.
Judges can register for either junior or senior high divisions, with orientation beginning at 8 a.m. each day at the ISU Alumni Center. Complimentary lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The SSTFI experience is both rewarding and impactful. José González, a previous judge and research scientist, shared, “It’s inspiring to see young students curious about the world and testing their hypotheses.” Another judge, Toby Adjuik, praised the students’ depth of knowledge and confidence in presenting their work.
