Yield Data Helps Farmers Improve Precision Agriculture Decisions

Yield data is one of the most important tools available to modern farmers. It reflects the combined impact of an entire growing season, including management practices, weather conditions, soil quality, and crop inputs. By collecting, organizing, and analyzing this information, producers can gain a better understanding of field performance and make more informed decisions for future seasons.

A crop’s final yield is influenced by several factors. Soil fertility, fertilizer applications, pest control strategies, sunlight, rainfall, and other environmental conditions all play important roles. Because yield data captures the results of these influences, it serves as a valuable resource for evaluating what worked well and identifying areas for improvement.

Historical yield records are especially useful in precision agriculture. Farmers can use past performance data to develop site-specific management plans that improve efficiency and productivity. Yield information can also support variable-rate seeding and fertilizer applications, helping producers match inputs to the needs of different areas within a field.

To help growers better understand these opportunities, Michigan State University Extension has been highlighting the value of yield data through its educational programming. During the Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series, participants can learn how digital agriculture tools help transform farm information into practical management decisions.

One of the featured presentations focuses on modern digital farming platforms such as the John Deere Operations Center and Climate FieldView. These technologies allow producers to collect, store, and analyze field data more efficiently. By using these systems, growers can track performance trends, evaluate management practices, and improve decision-making across their operations.

During the program, Richard Price Jr., Conservation Systems Agronomy Educator for MSU Extension, demonstrates "MI Digital Farm," a digital platform designed to use data analytics for precision agriculture, conservation efforts, and soil prescription development. The platform aims to help growers make better use of available data while improving both productivity and sustainability.

The educational sessions also include weather and climate updates. Jeff Andresen, Extension Agricultural Meteorologist, provides weather summaries, forecasts, and climate information that can help farmers plan field activities and respond to changing growing conditions.

Another presentation features Tor Tolhurst, Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University, who examines factors influencing farmland values. Topics include long-term land value trends, the impact of data centers and solar developments, and potential pressures facing agricultural land markets in the future.

The Virtual Breakfast Series is offered throughout the growing season and provides farmers with access to timely information from university specialists and educators. Sessions include presentations, weather updates, and interactive question-and-answer opportunities that allow participants to discuss current agricultural challenges directly with experts.

Additional benefits are available for attendees, including restricted use pesticide credits and certified crop adviser continuing education units. These opportunities help participants stay informed while meeting professional development requirements.

Participation in the program is free and accessible through online platforms or phone connections. Registered participants receive meeting details, reminders, and access information for upcoming sessions.

As precision agriculture continues to evolve, yield data remains a powerful tool for improving farm management. When combined with digital technologies, weather insights, and educational resources, this information can help producers increase efficiency, optimize input use, and strengthen the long-term success of their farming operations.
