2025 Winter Wheat Planting Tips for Wisconsin Growers

2025 Winter Wheat Planting Tips for Wisconsin Growers

By Blake Jackson

Winter wheat planting for 2025 is approaching, and proper preparation can set the stage for a successful crop. Here are nine key recommendations to help Wisconsin growers start the season strong.

First, variety selection is critical. Refer to the 2025 Wisconsin Winter Wheat Performance Test to choose varieties suited to your region. Always plant new seed rather than saved seed to ensure vigor and disease resistance.

A fungicide seed treatment is strongly recommended, particularly for seed that may have been affected by Fusarium head blight (FHB).

Cephalosporium stripe, a growing concern in Wisconsin, can reduce yield, so selecting varieties with partial resistance is essential. Plant wheat at a depth of 1 to 1.5 inches, regardless of planting date, to promote strong root development.

The ideal planting window is between September 20 and October 10. For wheat planted from September 20 to October 1, aim for a seeding rate of 1,750,000 seeds per acre.

If planting occurs after October 1, incrementally increase the seeding rate to compensate for reduced fall tillering.

Finally, crop rotation remains an important factor in maintaining soil health and managing disease pressure. Following these guidelines will help ensure a healthy and productive winter wheat crop for the 2025 season.
