Advancing Beef Careers Through Beef SD

Advancing Beef Careers Through Beef SD

By Scout Nelson

Since 2010, the beef SD program has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of cattle producers across South Dakota and Minnesota. This educational initiative, managed by SDSU Extension, focuses on advancing the expertise of beginning beef producers through a detailed two-year curriculum that covers the entire beef production process from conception to consumption.

Erin DeHaan, Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Beef Specialist, emphasizes the program's goal to deepen participants' understanding of their roles within the beef supply chain and enhance their ability to adapt to industry changes.

According to program feedback, nearly 96% of alumni feel more prepared for industry shifts, and over 85% have reported financial gains attributed to skills and knowledge acquired from beef SD.

Participants in the program, representing over 270,000 acres of land, have successfully implemented advanced strategies in rangeland management and herd genetics, leading to extended grazing seasons and improved meat quality.

Stacy Hadrick, SDSU Extension Associate and beef SD Coordinator, notes the transformative impact of beef SD, highlighting numerous success stories that have emerged over the years.

One notable example involves Jim Bob and Jacey Ellsworth, who, after participating in the program, explored new business models like retaining ownership of steers until market readiness, a decision that has opened new operational avenues for them.

The program also encourages involvement in agricultural organizations, with 80% of participants reporting increased engagement in industry networks post-completion.

Looking ahead, the introduction of Class 7 in fall 2024 marks a new chapter for beef SD, with a focus on integrating precision livestock technologies. This addition underlines the program's commitment to staying at the forefront of agricultural innovation.

The continued success of beef SD is a testament to the dedication of SDSU Extension and its specialists, who are passionate about nurturing the next generation of cattle producers and ensuring the program's enduring legacy in the beef industry.
