ARPC Expands Support for Rural Businesses

ARPC Expands Support for Rural Businesses

By Scout Nelson

The Agricultural Risk Policy Center at North Dakota State University recently joined agricultural leaders and government officials during Senator John Hoeven’s visit to the NDSU campus. The discussion focused on important agricultural policy issues and new export opportunities for rural businesses and producers.

Sandro Steinbach, director of the Agricultural Risk Policy Center, represented the center during the roundtable event. Other participants included USDA Farm Service Agency Under Secretary Richard Fordyce, NDSU President Marshall Stewart, NDSU College of Agriculture Dean Greg Lardy, industry representatives, and agricultural stakeholders.

The group discussed several challenges currently affecting agriculture. Topics included market volatility, trade conditions, fertilizer costs, supply chain concerns, prevented planting programs, and crop planting dates. Leaders also explored ways to strengthen the farm safety net and improve support programs for producers making difficult business decisions.

During the visit, Senator Hoeven announced a new partnership between the Agricultural Risk Policy Center and the National Rural Export Center. The partnership aims to help rural businesses expand export opportunities and compete in global markets more effectively.

The Agricultural Risk Policy Center was created in 2024 with funding support secured by Senator Hoeven. Since then, the center has provided research and analysis on important agricultural topics, including fertilizer price changes, commodity markets, supply chain disruptions, and international trade practices. Its work helps policymakers and producers better understand risks affecting agriculture.

The National Rural Export Center works with regional centers across the country to help rural businesses access export markets and business services. Leaders believe this partnership will strengthen connections between research, policy, and market opportunities for agricultural communities.

“We have two incredible institutions in Fargo supporting our farmers, ranchers and rural businesses – NDSU’s Ag Policy Research Center and the National Rural Export Center,” said Senator John Hoeven. “On their own, these initiatives have been great resources for strengthening farm and rural economies.”

“ARPC exists to provide timely, data-driven insights that help policymakers and producers manage market uncertainty and make informed decisions,” said Dr. Sandro Steinbach. “Our work strengthens agricultural risk management policies, helping U.S. farmers and ranchers navigate uncertainty, protect their livelihoods, and support resilient rural economies.”
