Farmers and agricultural professionals gathered at Kentucky State University’s Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm on July 7, 2026, for the “Blooms, Bees, and Biodiversity for Thriving Farms” field day, an educational event focused on improving pollinator habitats, organic farming practices, and overall farm sustainability.
Hosted in partnership with the Organic Association of Kentucky, the event welcomed 33 participants to the university’s certified organic production area, Honeybee Station, and pollinator research plots. The program combined research demonstrations with practical information that growers can apply to strengthen biodiversity and enhance farm productivity.
The field day was organized by Kentucky State University’s organic agriculture team, led by Research and Extension Associates Oluwaseun “Seun” Mofikoya and Linelle Rivera-Rodriguez, with support from Land Grant Program specialists in pollinator habitat development and beekeeping.
Participants first explored the university’s cut flower production area, where they compared several organic weed management methods.
Demonstrations featured wood mulch, landscape fabric, and organic herbicides, allowing attendees to evaluate each approach based on effectiveness, labor requirements, and suitability for certified organic production.
Proper weed control is essential because unwanted vegetation competes with flowers for water, nutrients, and sunlight.
The group also visited a native pollinator habitat research site led by forestry Research and Extension Associate Kirstin Conrad.
The project includes more than 30 native plant species and examines how cover crops, tillage practices, and herbicide treatments influence successful habitat establishment while supporting bees and other beneficial insects.
At the Honeybee Station, Research Assistant Kenneth Holbrook introduced participants to the fundamentals of beekeeping, including selecting appropriate hive locations, understanding local regulations, obtaining training, and planning for equipment and colony management.
Holbrook also encouraged new beekeepers to seek guidance from experienced mentors and local beekeeping organizations.
The event concluded with discussions on how integrating flower production, pollinator habitats, and managed honeybee colonies can improve biodiversity, support healthy ecosystems, and create more sustainable farming operations. Attendees left with practical knowledge and research-based strategies they can adapt to their own farms and communities.
