Celebrate agriculture week at Northwest Missouri State

Celebrate agriculture week at Northwest Missouri State

By Blake Jackson

Northwest Missouri State University is gearing up to celebrate the significance of agriculture in the region with a week-long event, "Celebrate Agriculture Week," scheduled from November 9th to 16th. The highlight of this event is the second annual Taste of Northwest Agriculture Market, which will take place on November 16th.

This week-long celebration aims to showcase the University's Agricultural Learning Center (ALC), located on the R.T. Wright Farm.

The ALC will be the hub of various educational sessions, networking opportunities, and competitions throughout the week.

The Taste of Northwest Agriculture Market, a collaborative effort between the School of Agricultural Sciences and the Missouri Agriculture, Food, and Forestry Innovation Center, invites both producers and consumers to explore the ALC.

Visitors can engage with Northwest faculty, staff, and students to learn about the innovative initiatives and educational programs within the facility.

The market will offer a unique opportunity to sample local products, experience the flavors of the region, and gain insights into the crucial role of local food systems in building resilient communities. Local producers will have the chance to connect with potential buyers and receive valuable feedback to refine their products and recipes.

In addition to the market, Celebrate Agriculture Week will feature a range of other events:

  • Career Networking Event: A networking event for agriculture students to connect with employers will be held on November 12th.
  • Little National Western Livestock Show: Hosted by the Block and Bridle organization on November 13th, this event will showcase livestock and provide an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience.
  • Chili and Soup Cook-off: The Agronomy Club, Horticulture Club, and agronomy majors will host a chili and soup cook-off, along with cornhole and yard games, on November 14th.
  • Barbeque Contest: Alpha Gamma Rho and Sigma Alpha will organize a barbeque contest on November 15th.
  • Food Drive: A food drive will be conducted in collaboration with Hy-Vee to support the Maryville Ministry Center.

“If we sit back and think about the impact agriculture makes on each and every one of us from a food standpoint, we need to celebrate that,” Dr. Rod Barr, the director of the School of Agricultural Sciences, said. “That’s why we chose celebrate agriculture.”
