Drought concerns amidst Missouri crop progress

By Blake Jackson

Missouri experienced favorable fieldwork conditions during the week ending September 8th, with 6.8 days suitable for agricultural activities.

Despite below-normal temperatures and rainfall, farmers made progress in various tasks.

Key crop developments included:

  • Corn: 91% of corn reached the dent stage, surpassing the 5-year average of 87%. Harvesting began with 13% of the crop harvested compared to the average of 4%. Corn condition remained strong, with 2% very poor, 3% poor, 13% fair, 61% good, and 21% excellent.
  • Soybeans: 92% of soybeans were setting pods, and 23% were dropping leaves. Harvesting was initiated with 2% of the crop harvested. Soybean condition was assessed as 2% very poor, 5% poor, 20% fair, 59% good, and 14% excellent.
  • Cotton: 44% of cotton bolls were opening, compared to the 5-year average of 25%. Cotton condition was rated 4% very poor, 8% poor, 25% fair, and 63% good.
  • Rice: 28% of rice was harvested, exceeding the 5-year average of 6%. Rice condition was rated 3% very poor, 9% poor, 19% fair, 61% good, and 8% excellent.

Alfalfa hay's third cutting was completed, reaching 91% compared to the 5-year average of 89%.

Missouri's crops are progressing well, with favorable conditions supporting development and harvest activities. However, the ongoing drought situation remains a concern, especially for pastures in need of rain for regrowth.
