Pennsylvania's egg production in September 2024 reached 695.8 million eggs, a 3% increase compared to the previous year. Of this total, 648.5 million were table eggs, and 47.3 million were hatching eggs.
The state's total number of layers during September 2024 averaged 27.1 million, slightly down from the previous year. Despite this, egg production per 100 layers increased by 3% to 2,567 eggs.
Pennsylvania ranks third in egg production among the Northeastern states, following Maryland and New York. The state's egg industry contributes significantly to the regional economy.
The increase in egg production in Pennsylvania can be attributed to several factors, such as:
- Increased layer flock size: The number of laying hens in Pennsylvania increased slightly from September 2023 to September 2024.
- Improved egg production per layer: Despite a slight decrease in the average number of layers, egg production per 100 layers increased by 3%. This indicates that the laying hens in Pennsylvania were more productive in September 2024 compared to the previous year.
The growth in Pennsylvania's egg production is a positive sign for the state's poultry industry. It demonstrates the industry's ability to adapt to changing market conditions and meet consumer demand.
