End-of-year plant pest trends in Iowa

End-of-year plant pest trends in Iowa

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic (PIDC) is hosting a free webinar to provide an end-of-year review of plant pest and pathogen trends observed across Iowa in 2023-24.

The webinar, titled “PIDC Wrapped,” will take place on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Participants will hear an overview of common issues that affected homeowners, farmers, and industry professionals, as well as unique cases that stood out during the diagnostic season. Registration for the event is required.

During the 2023-24 diagnostic season, PIDC handled 413 plant and insect samples from across the Midwest. According to Chelsea Harbach, plant disease diagnostician with ISU Extension and Outreach, it was an active year for plant pest and pathogen cases.

“We encountered many of the usual issues faced by farmers and homeowners but also had some particularly interesting cases that we’re excited to discuss,” Harbach said.

The webinar will also offer attendees insight into the diagnostic process used by the clinic. It will cover the signs and symptoms of the most common plant pest and disease problems in the Midwest.

Harbach emphasized that the event aims to provide accurate, practical information on these issues, as misinformation can often mislead those dealing with plant health challenges.

This webinar presents a valuable opportunity for farmers, homeowners, and gardening enthusiasts to deepen their knowledge of plant pests and pathogens.

Attendees will learn about frequently occurring issues and gain insights from specific cases, helping them to better manage plant health in the future.
