Explore careers at UK agribusiness Career Fair 2024

By Blake Jackson

The 2024 Agribusiness and Industry Career Fair, held at the University of Kentucky, highlighted the vast network of careers within agriculture.

Organized by the UK Department of Agricultural Economics and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS), the event brought together students, alumni, and employers to explore the diverse opportunities in this critical field.

“Events like this are critical in an industry like agriculture, where relationships and networking are key,” said Susan Skees, lead organizer of the event. “The career fair allows students to explore job opportunities and connect with leaders across various sectors who understand that agriculture’s success depends on collaboration.”

Today's agricultural landscape demands strong networking skills. Students interacted directly with employers from companies like Farm Credit Mid-America and Corteva, learning about career paths beyond traditional farming roles.

“Interacting with recruiters from prominent companies like Farm Credit Mid-America and Corteva made me realize how valuable it is to connect with industry professionals," said Senior Talon Buchanan, an Agricultural Economics major. "I am now in close contact with several recruiters and have the option to pursue the opportunities they presented to me. This fair has given me valuable connections and a clearer sense of the steps I need to take for a successful career in agriculture.”

The event showcased the wide reach of agriculture across multiple sectors. Students met with representatives from leading companies, fostering connections that could shape their careers.

The fair wasn't just about jobs; it was about discovering a place in an industry that feeds the world. Students gained insights and connections, while some even discovered a newfound interest in agriculture's breadth.

Employers benefited too. They engaged with the next generation of talent and showcased their company culture and values. Dr. Aslihan Spaulding, chair of the Agricultural Economics department, commented, "The career fair allows our students to engage directly with industry professionals, gain insights into various career paths, and build relationships that will support their growth and success in agriculture."

These events bridge the gap between education and the workforce in agriculture. Students gain understanding of diverse opportunities and the importance of networking.

The organizers thank participating employers and students and invite interested organizations to join next year's fair. Contact Nicole Atherton at nicole.atherton@uky.edu for details.
