Family farmers push for fair farm bill

Family farmers push for fair farm bill

By Blake Jackson

Family farm advocates are lobbying for significant revisions to the upcoming Farm Bill. Their wish list includes:

  • Reduced subsidies for large factory farms: They believe current subsidies unfairly benefit large corporations, harming smaller producers.
  • Mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef: This would require clear labeling of where beef originates, giving consumers transparency and potentially supporting local farmers.
  • Increased competition in the meatpacking industry: Proposals include creating a watchdog position at the USDA to monitor meatpacking practices and requiring meatpackers to purchase a set amount of livestock directly from farmers.

Noah Earle, a Missouri farmer and advocate, argues that current labeling practices mislead consumers and benefit large corporations. "Everyone agrees we should know where our beef comes from," he says, reflecting widespread support for clear labeling among Missourians.

Earle believes the proposed Farm Bill doesn't go far enough. He criticizes the House version for cutting funding for vital programs that assist those struggling with food insecurity. He argues that these cuts exacerbate wealth inequality in rural communities.

Advocates urge Congress to enact meaningful changes that promote a more equitable and sustainable food system. Their priorities include fostering competition, reducing corporate control in the agricultural sector, and addressing potentially harmful agricultural practices. With the current Farm Bill expiring in September, time is running out for lawmakers to address these concerns.
