Farm safety push for planting season

Farm safety push for planting season

By Blake Jackson

A New York Farm Bureau campaign highlights safety concerns as planting season brings more farm equipment onto rural roads. Crashes between farm vehicles and cars are the deadliest type in the state, with collisions being most common.

The focus for drivers is on increased caution around farm equipment. This includes slowing down and giving ample space to vehicles with slow-moving vehicle signs. It's crucial to avoid passing in unclear conditions or designated no-passing zones.

Staying alert for turning farm equipment is essential, as tractors may turn wide or in unexpected directions. Avoiding distractions like cell phones allows drivers to see far ahead and react safely.

Farmers are reminded to display slow-moving vehicle emblems and appropriate speed signs. They should never exceed the rated speed of towed implements and ensure proper lighting is used during the day for better visibility.

Staying in the lane and avoiding soft shoulders is important to prevent rollovers. Finally, farmers are urged to be aware of vehicles behind them, especially when turning.
