Farmers Can Improve Cattle Profits at August Workshop

Farmers Can Improve Cattle Profits at August Workshop

By Blake Jackson

As cattle prices continue to reach record levels, producers face increasing pressure to manage costs and maximize returns.

To help cattle finishers improve efficiency and profitability, UW-Madison Extension Regional Educators and Specialists will host a Cattle Feeders Workshop on August 4, 2026.

The evening field day will take place at the Jensen Family farm, located at E3677 370th Ave. in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m., followed by the program at 6:00 p.m.

Participants will also have the opportunity to tour the Jensen family's newly constructed mono-slope cattle feeding facility and learn more about their farming operation.

The workshop will feature several educational sessions focused on practical cattle finishing management. Dr. Luiz Ferraretto, UW-Madison Extension Ruminant Nutrition Specialist, will discuss feed management and corn silage quality, highlighting strategies to reduce storage losses and improve feed efficiency from harvest through feeding.

Ryan Sterry, Regional Livestock Educator, and Bill Halfman, State Beef Outreach Specialist, will present recommendations for designing safe, efficient cattle handling facilities. Their session will cover practical layouts and cost-effective improvements that can enhance daily operations without requiring major investments.

Sterry and Halfman will also lead a chute-side discussion covering best practices for receiving cattle, along with proper vaccine and pharmaceutical handling techniques to support herd health.

The workshop is designed for beef and dairy cattle finishers of all operation sizes, as well as professionals in related agricultural industries.

Producers interested in attending should register by July 31 through the Dunn County Extension Office at (715) 232-1636 or by completing the online registration form at https://go.wisc.edu/p08lk8.
