Farmers DataLab Helps Growers Turn Data into Better Decisions

Farmers have long tested new seeds, crop-management techniques and other practices on their own fields to improve productivity and sustainability. However, many growers lack the time, tools and scientific expertise needed to analyze those experiments thoroughly and share useful conclusions with others.

A research initiative called Farmers DataLab is working to address that gap by combining farmers’ practical knowledge with scientific support.

Louis Longchamps, an assistant professor of digital agronomy in Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science, leads the initiative with graduate student Katie Rohrbaugh. Their approach puts farmers at the center of research, allowing scientists to provide technology, data analysis and specialized expertise based on questions that matter directly to growers.

The idea developed from Longchamps’ earlier research on precision weed control. He discovered that a technology-focused solution he developed did not address the concerns farmers considered most important. That experience encouraged him to reverse the traditional research process and begin supporting farmers in investigating their own priorities.

Rohrbaugh said the model recognizes that farmers and scientists contribute different forms of knowledge.

Growers understand their fields and operations deeply, while researchers can provide specialized methods for designing experiments, collecting information and interpreting results.

Farmers DataLab helps participants refine experimental designs, analyze field data and translate findings into decisions for future growing seasons. The team also works with specialists in areas such as soil biology and cover crops when additional expertise is needed. Participating farmers can also compare anonymous results with data from other farms, creating opportunities for shared learning.

Speed remains one of the biggest challenges. Scientific research often requires extensive testing and analysis, while farmers need practical answers quickly.

Longchamps said the team has reduced its reporting timeline from two years to about one year and continues improving data systems to deliver useful results during the growing season.

By combining farmer experience with scientific analysis, the initiative aims to encourage responsible innovation, strengthen confidence in agricultural research and support healthier farms and rural communities.
