The Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD) will host the 37th annual Nebraska Children’s Groundwater Festival on May 13, 2025, at Central Community College and College Park in Grand Island. This educational event welcomes around 900 fifth-grade students from 32 schools across 18 counties.
Students will explore six hands-on classroom sessions focused on groundwater and environmental topics, including aquifers, watersheds, soil health, ecosystems, stream quality, and hydropower. Additional outdoor activities and two stage shows will provide fun and interactive learning.
Presentations will be led by 38 water and natural resources organizations from across Nebraska. The 25-minute sessions aim to encourage critical thinking and environmental awareness among students. Volunteers from local high schools and middle schools will assist throughout the day, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience.
More than 100 volunteers will help with guiding school groups, assisting in lunch tents, supporting presenters, and managing registration desks. Activities will be spread across three buildings and outdoor spaces on the college campuses.
Thanks to sponsors, students can attend at no cost and enjoy a free lunch. The festival is open to media, and special press packets will be available at registration desks.
Founded in 1985, the festival has only been cancelled three times and has inspired similar events in nearly 40 U.S. states and countries like Canada, India, Mexico, and the UK. It promotes groundwater protection, responsible water use, and environmental stewardship among youth.
