Free Fruit Tree Pruning Event

Free Fruit Tree Pruning Event

By Scout Nelson

A free fruit tree pruning workshop will take place at JD Rivers’ Garden in Theodore Wirth Park, Minneapolis, offering an educational opportunity for people interested in learning practical orchard care skills. The event is scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Central Time) and welcomes adults as well as youth accompanied by attending adults.

The workshop is designed to help participants understand proper pruning techniques that support healthy tree growth and better fruit production. The session will be led by a University of Minnesota Extension educator, giving attendees the chance to learn from professional guidance while practicing directly on fruit trees.

Participants will work with apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees in a real community orchard environment, making the experience practical and easy to understand.

Tools needed for pruning will be provided at the event, allowing participants to focus fully on learning and practicing safely. Since the workshop takes place entirely outdoors, attendees are advised to dress according to weather conditions. Organizers have also planned a backup date on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in case extremely cold or snowy weather occurs. Registered participants will be notified through email if any changes are required.

The location, JD Rivers’ Garden, is situated at 2900 Glenwood Ave in Minneapolis. Street parking is available along Glenwood Avenue and nearby streets, making access convenient for visitors. Registration is free but required, and participants can sign up through the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board website.

This educational event highlights the importance of community learning and hands-on experiences in gardening. By joining this workshop, participants can gain practical skills that help maintain healthier fruit trees and encourage sustainable urban gardening practices. The program also provides a welcoming environment for families and learners of all ages to connect with nature while building useful knowledge.
