Michigan potato farmers have the opportunity to receive free soil health testing in Spring 2025 through a research project conducted by Michigan State University (MSU) Soil Health & Ecosystem Ecology Lab in partnership with the Michigan Potato Industry Commission.
Project Goals
This study aims to:
- Identify best management practices for improving soil health in potato-based cropping systems.
- Assess which soil health factors influence potato yield and quality.
- Provide a carbon and nitrogen intensity score for participating farms.
How It Works
Farmers growing potatoes as part of their row-crop rotation are eligible to participate. Once enrolled, farmers select up to three fields, and researchers will collect soil samples before planting and 60 days after planting in 2025.
Participants receive a detailed soil health report, including:
- Nutrient analysis, pH, and soil texture
- Soil respiration and microbial activity
- Carbon and nitrogen levels
- Beneficial and parasitic nematode assessment
How to Sign Up
Farmers can enroll by completing a survey before April 25, 2025. For more details, contact Monica Jean, MSU Extension Field Crop Educator, at atkinmon@msu.edu or call 616-443-8782.
This initiative is a collaboration between MSU, MSU Extension, and the Michigan Potato Industry Commission, aiming to enhance soil health and boost potato production.
