The Indiana Forage Council and Purdue University Extension are hosting a free virtual seminar titled “Hey There, Hay Here” on forage quality and testing. The event will take place on November 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. EST and is open to the public.
Keith Johnson, professor of agronomy at Purdue, emphasized the importance of forage testing beyond just obtaining numbers. “With the help of a trained nutritionist, the values from a forage analysis will permit the development of a ration, keeping livestock in excellent body condition regardless of where they are at in their life cycle,” Johnson said.
For those unable to access the seminar livestream from home, several viewing locations across Indiana will be available. More details on these locations can be found on the Extension website.
Jason Tower, superintendent of the Southern Indiana Purdue Agricultural Center, highlighted the benefits of hay analysis for meeting cows’ nutritional needs. “A hay analysis will help producers know the amount of supplementation needed to make up the nutritional shortfall in the hay,” Tower explained.
No registration is required for the seminar, making it easily accessible for anyone interested in improving their knowledge of forage quality and testing.
