Precision agriculture is transforming the landscape of farming through the integration of advanced technologies. At North Dakota State University (NDSU), associate professor Xin (Rex) Sun is spearheading efforts within the university's Food, Energy, and Water Security (FEWS) initiative to drive innovations in this field.
Under Sun's guidance, the agricultural and biosystems engineering department at NDSU utilizes data and technology to enhance the sustainability and productivity of farming.
Their work primarily focuses on developing precision tools that cater to modern agricultural needs, such as auto-steering systems and variable rate applications, which have significantly increased in usage over recent decades.
A pivotal component of NDSU's research involves the application of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to solve pressing agricultural challenges.
For instance, Sun's team is currently developing AI models that can identify and manage weed growth in crop fields autonomously. These models are trained using over 20 million crops and weed imagery data, enhancing their accuracy and efficiency.
One of Sun’s notable projects includes the creation of an intelligent weed sprayer designed by his doctoral student, Arjun Upadhyay. This device utilizes deep learning and machine vision to perform precise spot spraying, minimizing herbicide use and reducing environmental impact.
