Going global - USDA funds open doors for US agriculture

By Jamie Martin

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is taking a step towards a more global future for American agriculture. Through a new program called the Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP), the USDA is allocating $300 million to support US organizations in expanding their export reach.

This initiative aims to diversify export markets by focusing on regions with rising consumer demand and purchasing power, such as Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Secretary Vilsack highlighted the program's potential to create new markets and strengthen rural communities.

The initial round of RAPP funding will be distributed among 66 US organizations, allowing them to undertake various projects promoting US agricultural products. These projects encompass educational seminars, trade missions, and market research activities.

For instance, the Cranberry Institute will use the funding to target new customers in India, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. Similarly, the Southern Forest Products Association will focus on promoting Southern yellow pine products in the Caribbean market.

The U.S. Dairy Export Council and U.S. Meat Export Federation plan to explore opportunities in Africa and Southeast Asia, while the Brewers Association will tap into the booming craft beer scene in Southeast Asia.

With hundreds of projects expected to be launched under RAPP, this initiative can greatly expand the reach of US agriculture and boost the nation's agricultural sector.
