How to conduct effective farm research

How to conduct effective farm research

By Blake Jackson

Join Brian Geier, Communications Manager at the Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF), and Maggie Dungan, a farmer at Salad Days Farm, at the 2025 Organic Association of Kentucky (OAK) Conference on January 24, 2025. The conference, held from January 23-25, 2025, at Kentucky State University's Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm in Frankfort, Kentucky, will focus on the theme "Grounded in Organics: From Soil to Market."

During their session, “Farmer-Led Trials: How to Plan, Conduct, and Fund On-Farm Research,” scheduled for 10:30-11:45 am ET on January 24, Geier and Dungan will discuss how farmers can lead their own research initiatives. They will introduce OFRF’s Farmer-Led Trials (FLT) program, offer insights on conducting on-farm research, and present their “Farmers Guide to Conducting On-Farm Research.” Dungan will also share her personal experience with OFRF’s FLT program, focusing on a study exploring the effects of soil solarization on soil health.

Although the application process for the 2025 FLT program has closed, the session will provide valuable guidance on collaborating and crafting successful research proposals. For more information or to register for the conference, visit the OAK Conference website at oak-ky.org.
