Illinois Extension Support Helps Farmers Manage Economic Stress

Illinois Extension Support Helps Farmers Manage Economic Stress

By Andi Anderson

Farmers across Illinois are facing increasing economic pressure as they plan for future growing seasons. Tight profit margins, unpredictable markets and rising input costs are making daily farm decisions more difficult.

In response, University of Illinois Extension reminds agricultural producers, advisers, and families that free support resources are available statewide.

Economic stress can have serious personal impacts. Financial uncertainty and farm-related challenges may increase the risk of mental health concerns among producers and their families.

Studies show that farmers experience suicide at more than three times the rate of the general population, highlighting the importance of accessible support services.

“The farming and ag sector is facing many challenges when planning farm operations for 2026,” says Travis Burke, assistant dean and program leader for agriculture and agribusiness at Illinois Extension. “These resources are here to help and support the individuals feeding our world.”

Illinois Extension offers a wide range of assistance, including mental health vouchers, crisis support lines, and financial planning tools. Educators and specialists work throughout the state to support farmers, landowners, advisers, researchers, and others connected to agriculture.

“We want farmers to know, you are not alone,” says Emily Hansen, commercial agriculture educator with Illinois Extension. “Help is always available.”

Mental health support includes a dedicated farm stress and mental health website with educational materials, videos, and access to the Mental Health Vouchers for Ag Producers program. For more information, visit the mental health voucher site at  go.illinois.edu/MentalHealthVoucher.

This program connects producers and their families with local mental health professionals at no cost. Crisis assistance is also available through regional farm stress centers and national helplines.

Financial planning resources are provided through farmdoc tools, which help farmers evaluate cash flow, loans, crop insurance, and rental decisions. Visit farmdoc.illinois.edu to explore the tools available.

The Illinois Extension Farm Coach Blog also shares guidance on working with lenders, succession planning, and farm business management. To view articles, visit go.illinois.edu/FarmCoachBlog.

Additional support is available through other university extension programs and federal agencies. Farmers facing illness, injury, or natural disasters may also qualify for free operational assistance through Farm Rescue.

Illinois Extension encourages everyone connected to agriculture to check on one another and share these resources during challenging times.
