Illinois Soybean Breeding Project Delivers Promising New Varieties

Illinois Soybean Breeding Project Delivers Promising New Varieties

By Andi Anderson

Illinois soybean farmers have a reason to celebrate as a promising breeding project continues to deliver results.

Supported by the Illinois Soybean Checkoff, this project focuses on developing high oleic, low linolenic (HOLL) soybean varieties that not only meet market demands but also perform well in the field.

These soybeans feature the SOYLEIC trait, which enhances oil quality and value. With demand for high oleic oil growing, Illinois farmers can now access 10 improved SOYLEIC varieties, offering both competitive yields and added market value.

Dr. Eliana Monteverde recently provided an update on the project’s success during the 2024 harvest season. A total of 34 elite soybean lines, ranging from maturity groups II to IV, were tested in commercial trials.

Among these, nine lines showed yields equal to or higher than standard varieties from Pioneer. These top performers will be increased commercially in 2025, bringing more choices for farmers.

Looking ahead, the 2025 planting season is expected to be even more active. The team will conduct commercial trials on 36 new high-yielding lines across different locations in Illinois. Additionally, 347 soybean lines are set for preliminary and advanced trials. Overall, around 630 HOLL soybean lines will be planted to further improve the breeding pipeline.

This continuous research effort ensures that farmers have access to better soybean varieties every year. These varieties offer high yields, excellent oil quality, and increased market opportunities.

The project highlights how research and breeding programs can directly support farmers by offering reliable and profitable crop options. For more details and updates, farmers can visit the Field Advisor Research Hub.
