Interactive pasture walk on rotational grazing and soil health

By Blake Jackson

Join us in Angelica, NY, for an interactive pasture walk that delves into the relationship between rotational grazing and soil health. This event, hosted by the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced farmers and soil scientists.

Farm owner Rob Chamberlain will share his extensive experience managing a grazing operation for his 160-head crossbred herd, heavily influenced by Devon breeding. Chamberlain runs cow/calf pairs throughout the grazing season and markets grass-fed feeders year-round.

He will also discuss the installation of a solar water system, which has been instrumental in enhancing his ability to rotate cattle more intensively, thereby improving pasture gains.

NRCS Soil Scientist Matt Havens and Zach Warning will provide insights into soil health through practical demonstrations. They will explain what can be learned about soil health from soil pits and showcase various soil health indicators.

Katelyn Miller, the Southwest New York (SWNY) Forage Management Specialist, will discuss the optimal timing for weed management in pasture systems, offering valuable advice for maintaining healthy pastures.

Additionally, the NRCS’s Grazing Stick will be available for beginner graziers. Lynn Bliven from CCE Allegany County will introduce this useful tool, explaining how it can aid in managing grazing practices effectively.

Light refreshments and beverages will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to wear clean boots, though disposable boots will be available on-site.

The event will take place at 6639 County Road 43, Angelica, NY 14709. Look for signs indicating the CCE event. You’ll travel 0.9 miles from the road on a well-maintained farm lane, with ample space to turn around at the top.

While registration is not required, it is preferred to help plan refreshments and handouts. To register, contact Lynn Bliven at lao3@cornell.edu or 585-268-7644 x18.

This pasture walk promises to be an informative and engaging event for anyone interested in improving pasture management and soil health through rotational grazing. Don’t miss this chance to gain valuable insights from experts and fellow farmers alike.
