Investing in Michigans Dairy Future Through Education and Innovation

Investing in Michigans Dairy Future Through Education and Innovation

By Andi Anderson

Michigan’s dairy industry is experiencing strong growth, creating new opportunities for education, research, and workforce development.

Industry leaders recognize that long-term success depends on preparing skilled professionals who can support modern dairy operations. This belief has inspired continued investment in dairy education and training.

Michigan ranks first nationally for milk production per cow, exceeding the national average by 15 percent. The dairy industry also contributes approximately $15 billion annually to the state’s economy.

To support this growth, a new Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center recently opened, funded through a historic $30 million state investment. The facility serves as a hub for high-impact research, industry collaboration, and student learning.

Supporters of dairy education see this moment as a unique opportunity. Recent contributions to a dairy education endowment aim to expand teaching capacity and ensure student demand matches the needs of a growing industry.

“We have a brand-new dairy facility and a growing industry in Michigan," said Kevin. "Now we need to invest in people. Additional teaching staff gives us the opportunity to make Michigan State the leader in dairy education, not just in the Midwest but nationally.”

Strong connections between education and industry help shape successful careers. Many leaders began on family dairy farms, participated in youth agricultural programs, and pursued formal education in dairy science.

These experiences-built skills that later supported careers in agricultural finance, policy, farm management, and industry leadership.

Giving back to education has become a priority for those whose livelihoods were shaped by dairy. “Our livelihoods were built around dairy,” said Dana Sue. “When the opportunity came to support an endowment that strengthens teaching and education, it felt like the right fit.”

The endowment supports academic specialists, instructors, and hands-on learning opportunities. Areas of focus include nutrition, reproduction, genetics, herd management, dairy technology, judging teams, internships, and technology-based learning.

“As student enrollment in the MSU Dairy Education program grows, we must continue adapting our curriculum to reflect the latest dairy practices and emerging technologies,” said Dr. Joe Domecq.

Industry leaders emphasize the pace of technological change. “Whether it’s reproduction, facilities, nutrition or other areas, the technology is evolving so fast, it’s mind boggling,” said Dana Sue. Kevin added, “We need additional teaching staff to attract more students. This is an opportunity to teach more young people, so they are ready to support the industry as it continues to grow and evolve.”

Together, education and industry investment are shaping the future of Michigan dairy.
