Iowa Master Woodland Steward Program Builds Skilled Land Stewards

Iowa Master Woodland Steward Program Builds Skilled Land Stewards

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Master Woodland Steward Program is a specialized educational course designed to help residents learn how to care for and manage Iowa’s woodlands responsibly.

Scheduled from September 8 to October 20, 2026, the program welcomes woodland owners, land managers, stewards, school-teachers, loggers, and government employees who want to improve their understanding of sustainable forestry.

Sessions will take place at the Hamilton County Extension Office in Webster City, with classes beginning at 6:00 PM.

The main goal of the program is to help participants gain the knowledge and confidence needed to make informed decisions about caring for woodlands.

Iowa’s forests play an important role in supporting wildlife, protecting soil, improving water quality, and providing valuable natural resources. Because of this, well‑trained woodland stewards are essential for the long‑term health of these environments.

Participants will learn through a combination of classroom instruction, expert‑led discussions, and outdoor field visits. The course covers a wide range of topics, including tree identification, woodland ecology, forest health, invasive species management, and sustainable harvesting practices.

These lessons will help participants understand how forests function and what steps are required to maintain strong, healthy woodlands.

Field sessions allow participants to apply their learning directly in forested areas. By observing tree growth patterns, soil conditions, habitat structures, and management challenges firsthand, students gain practical skills they can use on their own land or in their workplaces. Local forestry experts guide these sessions and demonstrate real examples of woodland care.

The program encourages participants to take an active role in protecting Iowa’s natural resources. Graduates are better prepared to manage forests responsibly, improve habitat quality, and contribute to conservation efforts in their communities.

The skills gained in the program can also support better decision‑making in agriculture, outdoor education, and environmental planning.

The Iowa Master Woodland Steward Program is supported by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Those interested in joining or learning more may contact Sue Schmitz at the Hamilton County Extension Office.

This program provides a valuable opportunity for anyone who wants to protect and improve the health of Iowa’s woodlands.
