KDA and KHA collaborate to promote healthy food access

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) and the Kentucky Hospital Association (KHA) have joined forces to improve community health through better access to fresh, local food.

The first community roundtable for their "Food is Medicine" Initiative took place in Madisonville on July 31.

Hosted by Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville, the event brought together local officials, healthcare providers, farmers, and community leaders to discuss strategies for connecting agriculture with healthcare. The goal is to promote healthier food choices and create a sustainable food system that benefits all Kentuckians.

Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving these objectives. “By working together, we can create a healthier Kentucky,” Shell said. “This initiative is about getting our farm-fresh food to kitchen tables and ensuring every Kentuckian has access to nutritious food."

Travis Burton, KHA Associate Vice President of Government Affairs, commended Shell and the local hospital for their leadership. “Commissioner Shell's passion for increasing Kentuckians’ access to local and healthy food is appreciated by healthcare providers across the state,” Burton said. "Hospitals like the one we are sitting in work every day to improve the health of our patients and communities. The work surrounding the Food is Medicine initiative is greatly needed.”

The Madisonville roundtable is the first of many planned community discussions as the state works to build a healthier future for all Kentuckians.
