Kentucky dairy industry celebrates farmers dedication

Kentucky dairy industry was recognized in June by Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell. Dairy farmers were celebrated for their dedication and the nutritious products they provide.

Despite a slight decrease in dairy cattle (43,000 in 2024), Kentucky remains a significant milk producer, contributing over 105 million gallons annually. Milk, the official state beverage, is joined by ice cream, cheese, and more, all thanks to Kentucky's dairy farms.

These farms are not only about delicious food, but also about health. Dairy products provide essential calcium, protein, and vitamins to Kentucky families.

Economic impact is another benefit. Each dairy cow generates over $13,700 annually, making milk the eighth-largest agricultural product in the state. Barren County leads in dairy cow population, followed by Adair, Logan, Christian, and Todd counties.

"As we celebrate June Dairy Month Kentucky dairy farmers continue to elevate the bar for production and efficiency. Adoption of new developments in housing, genetics, and nutrition helps our dairy producers to stay at the forefront of dairy production, competing well in national recognition,” said Freeman Brundige, Kentucky Dairy Development Council President.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture plays a key role in finding new markets for dairy products and organizing cattle shows.
