Kentucky Farmers Gain Sheep and Goat Breeding Skills

Sheep and goat producers across Kentucky are gaining practical reproductive management skills through a hands-on educational program at Kentucky State University’s Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm.

The initiative equips farmers with knowledge traditionally provided by veterinarians and reproduction specialists, helping them strengthen breeding programs and improve herd performance.

During training sessions, participants study reproductive anatomy, become familiar with artificial insemination equipment, and practice breeding techniques using goats from the university’s herd.

The program emphasizes understanding the science behind reproductive management and the impact of breeding decisions on long-term livestock productivity.

For Dr. Sarah Carr, assistant professor of animal science, the focus is on giving producers the confidence and expertise to make informed breeding decisions.

“You cannot have production without reproduction,” Dr. Carr said. “Successfully managing breeding is a critical part of any operation.”

This philosophy guides Kentucky State’s expanding outreach efforts, which include hands-on workshops, farm demonstrations, webinars, and online educational resources designed for sheep and goat producers throughout the state.

A key component of the initiative is the Small Ruminant Artificial Insemination Clinic, first offered at Benson Farm in December 2025.

Participants receive classroom instruction covering reproductive anatomy, estrous synchronization, semen handling, and artificial insemination techniques before applying their knowledge through supervised practical exercises.

The clinic also highlights how genetics, animal health, proper timing, and sound management practices all contribute to successful breeding outcomes.

“Every decision can have significant consequences if careful consideration is not given to the health, management, selected traits, and genetics of every animal being bred,” Dr. Carr said. “We want to provide producers both knowledge and practical skills to manage their flock or herd the best way possible.”

Artificial insemination allows producers to introduce superior genetics without maintaining multiple breeding males or transporting livestock over long distances, supporting improved productivity and long-term profitability.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Carr collaborates with the Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office to provide breeding education through producer meetings, farm visits, and the 2025 and 2026 Farm Launch programs.

Kentucky State University plans to host its next Small Ruminant Artificial Insemination Clinic in October 2026, with additional details to be shared through the university’s Cooperative Extension Facebook page.
