Kentucky State to Host Farmer Skin Cancer Prevention Webinar

Kentucky State to Host Farmer Skin Cancer Prevention Webinar

By Blake Jackson

Researchers at Kentucky State University are preparing to host a virtual webinar focused on skin cancer risks facing farmers and agricultural workers across the state.

The online event, titled “Skin Cancer Webinar - Are Kentucky Farmers Vulnerable?”, is scheduled for May 27 from 10 to 11 a.m. Eastern time and will be conducted through Zoom.

The program will explore how long hours spent outdoors expose farmers to ultraviolet radiation, increasing the risk of skin cancer and other sun-related health concerns.

Organizers say the session will highlight ongoing USDA-supported research, prevention strategies, public health outreach efforts, and the role of Cooperative Extension in educating agricultural communities.

Several Kentucky State faculty members, research staff, and graduate students will participate in the webinar. Dr. Frederick Bebe, assistant research professor, will provide updates on the university’s USDA-funded skin cancer research project and lead a discussion examining how vulnerable Kentucky farmers may be to the disease.

Dr. Gladys Besona, senior research associate, will discuss prevention strategies for farmers and farm workers, including how Extension agents can help expand education and awareness efforts.

Graduate student Susan Fakolade will present findings related to skin cancer awareness and prevention practices among farmers in Kentucky’s Bluegrass Area Development District. Another graduate student, Ebenezar Akinola, will focus on statewide public health initiatives tied to skin cancer prevention.

“Farmers and farm workers often spend long periods outdoors, making sun exposure an important occupational health issue,” Dr. Bebe said.

“This program is an opportunity to share what we are learning through the research process, highlight student involvement, and discuss how Extension and public health partners can help strengthen awareness and prevention.”

The webinar follows recent research presentations shared during the 2026 Kentucky Public Health Association Conference. Organizers said the event will include presentations, a panel discussion, audience Q&A, and additional educational resources for participants.
