KSU Series Offers Practical Sheep and Goat Care Tips

KSU Series Offers Practical Sheep and Goat Care Tips

By Blake Jackson

Small day-to-day decisions can have a major impact on sheep and goat operations, especially when key management practices are overlooked at critical times of the year.

To help producers stay on track, Kentucky State University has introduced a new educational video series offering practical, research-backed guidance tailored to real farm conditions.

The series, Bluegrass Small Ruminant Solutions, is led by Dr. Valens Niyigena, assistant professor of livestock nutrition. It focuses on timely topics that reflect both seasonal demands and emerging challenges in small ruminant production across Kentucky and similar regions.

The first two videos, Winter Goat Management and Hoof Trimming, are now available to producers.

“Our goal is to bridge the gap between research and the farm gate,” Dr. Niyigena said.

This principle shapes the series’ approach, emphasizing clear, actionable insights rather than general recommendations. Each episode is designed to provide science-based strategies that producers can immediately apply to improve herd health, boost productivity, and enhance overall farm profitability.

Looking ahead, upcoming videos will cover a wide range of topics, including breeding and reproductive practices, parasite control, nutrition planning, pasture and forage management, animal welfare, and farm business strategies.

Content will be released throughout the year to match the seasonal needs of producers and evolving industry trends.

The initiative also supports Kentucky State University’s land-grant mission by integrating research, education, and Extension outreach. In addition, the series offers students valuable hands-on experience in developing and delivering agricultural content, helping connect academic learning with real-world farming needs.

Through this effort, Kentucky State continues to promote sustainable agriculture while preparing future leaders in the industry.
