Lancaster County Poultry Flock Tests Positive for HPAI

Lancaster County Poultry Flock Tests Positive for HPAI

By Blake Jackson

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) has confirmed a new case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a commercial flock located in Lancaster County.

This recent detection highlights the heightened risk associated with fall waterfowl migration, which can facilitate the movement of the virus across the state.

While poultry operations are most vulnerable, conservation staff, district personnel, and others who frequently visit farms play a critical role in preventing disease transmission.

HPAI is primarily spread through direct contact with infected wild birds or indirectly via contaminated equipment, vehicles, and footwear carrying feces or other fluids from wild birds.

Wild birds can carry and shed the virus without showing any signs of illness, contaminating soil, water, and other surfaces. Individuals traveling between farms, fields, and areas where birds gather could unknowingly transfer the virus to domestic poultry.

Steps to Reduce Risk

  • Clean and disinfect boots, clothing, and equipment before and after visiting each farm or site.
  • Use dedicated footwear or disposable boot covers whenever possible.
  • Allow downtime between visiting poultry and dairy operations.
  • Avoid contact with domestic birds or their housing after visiting areas frequented by wild birds.
  • Clean and disinfect vehicles, clothing, and gear used for wild bird-related or recreational activities.
  • Report sick or dead wild birds to the Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Health Unit.
  • Stay updated with PDA guidance and HPAI detection maps.

Even small preventive measures, such as disinfecting boots or using separate gear, can significantly reduce the risk of spreading avian influenza between wild and domestic flocks.
