Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture is hosting an informative meeting on orchard soil health and the role of beneficial fungi on August 15, 2024, from 3 to 5 p.m.
The event will be held at Northern Orchards Walker Farm, located at 688 River Rd, Peru, NY 12972. The session is free of charge, but registration is required.
The focus of this meeting is to explore the critical role that soil health plays in orchard productivity. Mycorrhizal fungi, known for their beneficial effects on soil, are a key topic of discussion.
While their advantages are recognized, there remains uncertainty about the impact of commercial mycorrhizal inoculants on tree growth during orchard establishment.
Participants will hear from experts including Dr. Debbie Aller, who will cover the basics of orchard soil health, and Dr. Kitty O'Neil, who will discuss strategies for planning climate resiliency in orchard soils. Mike Basedow will provide insights into the use of soil mycorrhizae specifically in New York apple orchards.
The event aims to educate farmworkers, new orchardists, and experienced orchard managers on soil health fundamentals and the potential benefits of mycorrhizal fungi.
Attendees will also receive updates on the current status of a SARE grant focused on orchard mycorrhizal products. The meeting promises to offer valuable knowledge and practical information for enhancing orchard management and productivity.
