The popular Maple Sugaring classes are returning to Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve, offering the public a chance to experience one of the region’s most cherished seasonal traditions.
The educational program will take place on three consecutive Sundays-February 15, February 22, and March 1 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve, located at 200 New Highway in Commack, New York. Admission is $5 per person, cash only, and the classes are open to all ages. Due to strong interest each year, visitors are encouraged to arrive by 1:00 p.m. to register.
Following a winter that brought consistent freeze-thaw cycles, organizers are anticipating an exceptional maple sugaring season. These weather conditions cold nights below freezing paired with daytime temperatures near 40 degrees create ideal sap flow. As a result, this year’s harvest is expected to be both plentiful and flavorful, adding to the excitement surrounding the program.
“This is one of our Town’s most beloved educational programs and truly an experience every resident should enjoy," said Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim.
"The maple syrup-making process reflects a treasured part of our history, and Jeff Gumin, Sheryl Brook, and the entire Hoyt Farm team consistently go above and beyond to deliver an engaging and memorable demonstration. It’s truly unforgettable and perfect for families of all ages.”
The program explores the full history of maple sugaring, from Native American origins to modern production methods. Younger participants will enjoy hands-on learning focused on tree anatomy, photosynthesis, and how sap becomes syrup.
A distinctive aspect of Hoyt Farm’s program is the tapping of Black Walnut trees alongside maple trees, offering visitors a broader look at sugaring techniques.
Hoyt Farm’s Maple Sugaring Program continues to attract families, school groups, scout troops, and nature enthusiasts. For more information about this or other programs, call (631) 543-7804.
