Mike Watkins Receives Penn State Poultry Honor

By Blake Jackson

Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences is recognizing Mike Watkins, vice president of live operations at Bell & Evans in Fredericksburg, with its 2026 Distinguished Poultry Science Alumnus Award.

Watkins graduated from Penn State in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in poultry management and technology. He began his professional career in the poultry industry immediately after graduation and has spent more than 30 years building experience in live production.

Watkins career has included positions with Empire Kosher Poultry, Perdue Farms, and BJE Contracting, followed by 13 years with Bell & Evans.

“I have been very fortunate to be able to have a long career in live production,” Watkins said. “It has been a challenging and rewarding experience. The solid foundation I was provided by the University and college was the steppingstone that set me up for success.”

Watkins also expressed appreciation for being selected for the award, saying, “I feel very humbled and proud to be receiving this award. I know many talented individuals have come through this department."

Rebecca Krisher, professor and head of Penn State’s Department of Animal Science, said Watkins represents the type of graduate the program aims to develop. “Mike has built an exceptional career through his deep knowledge of live poultry production, practical leadership and sustained commitment to the industry.”

She added that his professional accomplishments have supported the Pennsylvania poultry industry and reflect positively on Penn State’s poultry science program.

Watkins encouraged students considering careers in poultry to pursue opportunities with determination.

“The opportunities are endless for those who put the effort in,” Watkins said. “If a young person is willing to come in, work hard and bide their time, the sky is the limit. You will truly get out of it what you put in.”

The award will be presented on September 16, 2026, during the 2026 Poultry Sales and Service Conference.
