The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is encouraging the growth of agricultural cooperatives through its Cooperative Development Grant Program. This initiative provides essential funding aimed at supporting the establishment and expansion of farmer-owned cooperatives that handle the production, processing, and marketing of locally grown agricultural products.
With an allocation of approximately $160,000 for this funding round, the program underscores Minnesota’s commitment to reinforcing its agricultural sector and supporting community-based agricultural efforts.
The grants are designed to fund various business development strategies that directly contribute to the successful commercialization of agricultural commodities, products, or services in the state.
Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen emphasized the historical importance and current relevance of farmer-owned cooperatives to the state's agricultural framework.
He stated, “Farmer-owned cooperatives have been the backbone of Minnesota agriculture for more than a century. With this grant program, we can help further strengthen the agricultural cooperative network across our state and expand opportunities for locally produced commodities, products, or services.”
Interested parties are invited to apply for funding amounts ranging from $2,500 to $50,000 per project. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the cooperative model by providing at least 50% of the total project cost in matching funds. This requirement ensures that the grants are effectively leveraged to generate substantial local impact.
The application process is set against a strict deadline, with all proposals due by 4 p.m. Central Time on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
