Missouri agriculture prices decline in September 2024

Missouri agriculture prices decline in September 2024

By Blake Jackson

In September, the Prices Received Index for agricultural production, based on the 2011 base year, stood at 120.8, reflecting a decline of 5.6% from August and 0.9% from the same month last year.

The Crop Production Index fell to 99.0, a decrease of 1.1% compared to the previous month and a notable 13% decline from September 2023. Conversely, the Livestock Production Index rose to 146.3, down 7.5% from August yet up 11% from September of the previous year.

Price fluctuations for various commodities were evident in September, with producers receiving lower prices for market eggs, cattle, hogs, and lettuce. However, prices increased for milk, corn, broilers, and turkeys.

The changes in these indexes are influenced not only by price variations but also by shifts in the volume of commodities marketed.

Notably, September saw a decrease in the marketing of cattle, wheat, cotton, and peaches, while there was an uptick in the movement of soybeans, corn, dry beans, and calves.

In Missouri, the prices for key commodities in September 2024 included corn at $3.86 per bushel, hay averaging $123.00 per ton, and soybeans priced at $10.20 per bushel, indicating ongoing market challenges and opportunities for local producers.
