The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is inviting landowners to attend a prescribed burn workshop on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Missouri Soybean Association in Columbia. The training will introduce participants to the fundamentals of using prescribed fire as a land-management tool.
Prescribed burns can help improve native plant diversity and reduce unwanted vegetation, but they must be carefully planned and conducted to avoid safety risks and poor results. The workshop will cover essential information for developing and carrying out a controlled burn.
Advance registration is required. Participants must complete an online prescribed burn course before attending the in-person session. The online training costs $25, and attendees should bring their completion certificate to the workshop.
Weather permitting, the event will include a demonstration burn. Participants should wear long-sleeved shirts and pants made from natural fibers, leather gloves, and closed-toe leather boots.
