Missouri State University’s William H. Darr College of Agriculture marked its 10th anniversary on October 17, 2026, during the Ag Alumni Celebration, bringing together approximately 200 alumni, faculty, staff and supporters.
The event raised $37,000 to support the college and recognize a decade of progress in agricultural education, research and student development, according to Bri Record at Missouri State University.
The college was established in 2016 when the university’s School of Agriculture received its new designation. Carrie Crews, an administrative specialist who joined the institution in 2005, reflected on the organization’s development.
“The Darr College of Agriculture faculty, staff and students are resilient in times of change,” Crews said. “We had the opportunity to learn and grow into the college we are now.”
Building a Stronger Agricultural Education Program
Dean Melissa Bledsoe, who became dean in 2024, said the transition strengthened agriculture’s position within the university and created opportunities for collaboration. The college’s development followed years of work by former director Dr. Anson Elliott, who led the program from 1980 to 2016, and its first dean, the late Dr. Ron Del Vecchio.
“Becoming a college was about much more than a name change,” said Bledsoe, who became dean in 2024. “It gave agriculture a stronger identity and greater visibility within the university and beyond, while creating new opportunities for growth and partnerships.”
Expanding Facilities, Research and Academic Opportunities
During its first five years, faculty members secured more than $10.4 million in grants. Other milestones included launching the Agriculture Academy, receiving the 80-acre Kindrick Family Farm and developing the equine science program.
The Small Animal Education Center opened in 2023, followed by the Agricultural Innovation Hub in 2025, providing additional opportunities for practical learning. Hospitality leadership also joined the college in 2023, expanding collaboration across disciplines.
New offerings include a forestry option in natural resources, an agricultural technology undergraduate certificate, and an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in tourism management.
The college has also earned recognition for its achievements, including the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame induction of its Equestrian Team in 2026 and a patent for the Norton Blanc grapevine developed at the State Fruit Experiment Station.
Alumni Support and Future Priorities
The anniversary celebration highlighted the contributions of alumni, including Bill and Virginia Darr, whose legacy is reflected in the college’s name. Alumni scholarships continue to help students balance academic studies with employment and family farming responsibilities.
Looking ahead, the Darr Next strategic plan establishes priorities through 2030, including student recruitment and success, academic excellence, experiential learning and research, and stronger industry and community partnerships.
“The first 10 years established a strong foundation for the Darr College of Agriculture,” Bledsoe said. “I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together in the next 10.”
