Mizzou Student Shares Passion for Agriculture at State Fair

University of Missouri sophomore Addie Kemper will enter the show ring at the Missouri State Fair this year with greater confidence and a stronger ability to share the story of agriculture.

Through her studies in Mizzou’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Kemper has expanded her understanding of the industry while developing the skills needed to advocate for farming and livestock production.

“At the fair, people ask questions about farming, and Mizzou has given me the confidence to explain what we do and why we do it,” Kemper said.

Kemper is among the many exhibitors participating in the Missouri State Fair, held August 13-23, 2026, in Sedalia. The event will highlight agriculture through exhibits, educational programs, and activities designed to connect visitors with the latest research, innovation, and leadership opportunities in the industry.

Raised in Hawk Point, Missouri, Kemper grew up caring for sheep on her family’s farm. Those experiences taught her the responsibilities that come with livestock ownership and provided firsthand insight into agricultural life.

“Most people don’t realize how much time goes into raising livestock,” Kemper said. “They don’t see the middle-of-the-night checks to make sure newborn lambs survive, the early morning chores or the constant work that goes into keeping our sheep healthy.”

Agriculture has deep roots in her family. Addie parents met while attending Mizzou, and her father, Tim Kemper, was a sheep exhibitor at the Missouri State Fair. Following in his footsteps, Addie began showing sheep at age 8 and quickly developed a passion for animal care and competition.

A lifelong Mizzou supporter, Kemper said she always felt connected to the university and immediately felt welcomed during her campus visit.

Now majoring in agricultural leadership, communications and education with a minor in animal science, she credits her farming background for shaping her work ethic.

“Growing up on a farm, I learned that even on the toughest days, you have to get up and keep going,” Kemper said.

“At Mizzou, when classes get challenging or obstacles come up, I don’t give up. Farming taught me that hard work, resilience and dedication are what make difficult things possible.”

Kemper dedication has led to numerous achievements, including winning the prestigious Missouri State Fair Showmanship plaque in 2024, an honor her father also earned years earlier.
