MSU researchers seek farmer input on soil nutrient practices

MSU researchers seek farmer input on soil nutrient practices

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University (MSU) researchers are seeking farmer innovations to improve soil nutrient management practices, particularly concerning phosphorus and nitrogen.

While soil nutrient deficiencies limiting crop yield are a common concern, excess nutrients often make headlines due to their environmental impact, especially in Michigan, where the Great Lakes receive any surplus nutrients.

This creates an urgent need to identify best practices that adequately feed crops without contributing to nutrient loading in the Lakes.

A research team at MSU is evaluating the relationship between soil type, crops grown, and practices used to manage soil phosphorus and nitrogen. They are asking farmers from all types of production systems to help by completing a brief anonymous online survey.

The survey aims to gather information about soil conditions and the methods farmers use for managing soil phosphorus and nitrogen. The insights shared will help identify promising approaches for researchers to test on different soil types and with various field crops, vegetables, fruits, and pasture rotations.

The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Start the survey. Participants can enter a drawing for Michigan State University hoodies upon completion. The deadline to take the survey is November 1, 2024, and winners will be announced on December 1, 2024, with prizes mailed to the winners.

This research is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. For any questions, please contact Vicki Morrone at sorrone@msu.edu.

Farmers' contributions to this research are vital for developing effective soil nutrient management practices that protect the environment while supporting agricultural productivity. Your input can help shape sustainable farming practices for the future.
