MSU Webinar Helps Farmers Tackle Corn Pests This Season

MSU Webinar Helps Farmers Tackle Corn Pests This Season

By Andi Anderson

As corn fields move closer to the tasseling stage, farmers are encouraged to review their pest management plans and prepare for potential insect challenges. To support growers during the growing season, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension will feature a special session on corn insect management as part of its 2026 Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series on July 16.

The educational program will focus on managing western bean cutworm and other insect pests that commonly affect corn during the mid- and late-growing season. These pests can reduce both crop yield and grain quality, directly impacting farm profitability if not identified and controlled in a timely manner.

The session will feature Chris DiFonzo, PhD, of Michigan State University, who will provide the latest information on scouting, identifying, and managing insect populations in corn fields. Participants will learn practical techniques for monitoring pest activity and making informed management decisions throughout the season.

Following the pest management presentation, Jeff Andresen, MSU Extension Agricultural Climatologist, will present the weekly weather report. The session will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer period, allowing participants to discuss field concerns with MSU Extension specialists and educators.

The Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series is conducted weekly throughout the growing season using Zoom video conferencing and telephone access. Sessions are held every Thursday morning from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. between March and September. The program is designed to address current agricultural issues and adapt to changing growing conditions as they arise.

A 20-minute question-and-answer segment is included after each presentation, giving participants the opportunity to receive expert guidance on production challenges. Attendees are encouraged to join a few minutes before the session begins to test technology settings and receive important announcements.

The program also offers educational credits for agricultural professionals. Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) credits and Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) continuing education units are available for those who participate in the live webinar sessions.

Participation is free and accessible through computers, tablets, smartphones, or standard telephone lines. Farmers who are unable to attend the live broadcast can watch recorded sessions later. However, only live participants qualify for RUP and CCA credits.

Individuals interested in joining the series must register once to receive email notifications, Zoom links, telephone access information, and weekly reminders.

The webinar series continues to provide growers with timely information on pest management, weather conditions, and crop production practices, helping them make informed decisions throughout the growing season.
